I have been coming to Elvaston Castle for as long as I can remember. From when I was first born my mum would take me on walks here. As soon as I could walk and run, I was playing hide and seek being trees in the gardens. I have many fond memories here.
Elvaston Castle is the former home of the Earls of Harrinton. This gothic revival stately home and country park is set in 321 acres of Derbyshire countryside. It encompasses parkland, woodland, formal gardens and a nature reserve. Unfortunately the house is no longer open to the general public and is on the Buildings At Risk register. However, the grounds are still free to all to roam to their hearts content. And this is exactly what we decided to do one December morning with our little Heidi, take her out for a walk in what was the first snow she has ever experienced. She marvelled at it. Inches of snow dusting every tree branch, the lake half frozen over. It really was a winter wonderland.
