Nestled in the East Midlands countryside is Twycross Zoo.
80 acres of land housing almost 150 species, some of which are the most endangered on the planet. Twycross is a zoo that specialises in primates. Renowned for its breeding programme that has seen the first births here in the UK of thirteen different species and is home to this countries only group of bonobo monkey’s. In fact, Twyross has the largest collection of primates in Europe. However, they not only home monkeys and apes but a number of other species. My favourite being the snow leopards and amur leopards who had recently had cubs.
Last weekend we had no plans and Peter suggested visiting the zoo and I couldn’t resist! We used Heidi as an excuse but it all actuality it was for us. Not being too far from home, Twycross won out and we enjoyed 5 glorious hours taking a look at the animals. It isn’t the biggest zoo there is, I’d probably say it was medium sized so easily doable in half a day and to say that they specialise in primates there was still enough variety of other animals to see. An ideal day trip for the family.
Here is a photo diary of our day.
